Rapsody is an American rapper who became the force to be reckoned with in the rap game. In just ten years, she has released two full-length albums, four mixtapes and two EPs. She has also worked with some of the industry’s biggest legends and newcomers including Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Raekwon, Big Daddy Kane, Mac Miller and Big KRIT

In 2018, Rapsody became the fifth woman ever to be nominated for a Grammy award for Best Rap Album. She achieved this feat with her second full-length album, Laila’s Wisdom .

Who’s Rapsody – The American Rapper?

Rapsody real name, Marlanna Evans was born on 21. January 1983 in Snow Hill, North Carolina. Growing up, her father was a mechanic and her mother, Margaret, was an artist. Rapsody’s rap journey began with poetry. As a teenager, she wrote poetry to release pent-up emotions and fell in love with famous poets such as Maya Angelou and Nikki Giovanni. Initially, Rapsody wasn’t a huge fan of rap music, but her cousins introduced her to artists like Lauryn Hill, A Tribe Called Quest and NAS. She then fell in love with rap and started pursuing her dream of becoming a rap artist one day.

Despite her love of rap, Rapsody didn’t have enough confidence to pursue it seriously. While attending North Carolina State University, her friends encouraged her to give it a try. She therefore joined a hip-hop collective called H2O and its spin-off Kooley High. She released three eps with the group between 2008 and 2011. Her first big break came in 2005 when H2O hooked up with acclaimed hip-hop producer and rapper 9th Wonder.

9th Wonder, who features the likes of Destiny Child and Jay Z, listened to their short tape and immediately saw its potential. He took her under his wing and taught her what she needed to know to brush up on her skills. He also gave her a feature on his 2nd album, The Dream Merchant Vol 2. In 2008, 9th Wonder officially signed her to his record label, Jamla and Rapsody released their first work, a mixtape titled Return of the B-Girl in 2010. She followed with two more mixtapes, Many HER Now and For Everything In 2011 she released her first album entitled Die Idee des SchönenTo date, she has released a total of four mixtapes, three EPs, and two full-length studio albums as a solo artist.

Rapsody got their second big break in 2015 when Kendric Lamar introduced her compilation , one of the songs on his critically acclaimed 2015 album, To Pimp a Butterfly. The dynamic verse she left in the song has propelled her from an underground artist into a mainstream artist.

The talented wordsmith didn’t rest on her laurels, but kept working hard. She signed a record deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label in 2016 and released her second album, Laila’s Wisdom in September 2017. Laila’s Wisdom is a 14-track album named after her grandmother, Laila Ray, and boldly explores themes of war, drug abuse, Addressed en masse, gender dynamics and police violence. The album received positive reviews from critics, and rapper Busta Rhymes praised it as the best album he had heard in the last 10 years.

Laila’s wisdom was presented as a combination of old-school classic hip-hop and energetic new-school sounds. In 2018 it was nominated for Best Rap Album alongside 4:44 – Jay-Z, Damn – Kendrick Lamar, Culture – Migos, Flower Boy – Tyler, the Creator. Sassy, one of the tracks on the album, was also nominated for Best Rap Song. With the nomination, Rapsody became only the fifth woman to be nominated for Best Rap Album. While she hasn’t claimed the crown, there’s no doubt that she’s one of the strongest and most promising forces in hip-hop culture today. She was recently named one of the best female artists by TIME Magazine and USA Today. She was also named one of the 20 Greatest Female Rappers of All Time by XXL.

As a woman, it’s not surprising that most of Rapsody’s biggest childhood musical influences were equally female rappers. She loved the work of artists like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hil, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown and Jean Grae. Rapsody is a rapper who has refused to be defined by her gender. She doesn’t think female rappers should compete against each other, but believes women can rap against the best and still come out on top. One thing to note about Rapsody is that she’s a rapper who doesn’t focus on commercial music, instead focusing on socially conscious music.
