She developed as a performer in part at the nearby California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda, California, where her mother worked as the house manager during the summer.
She assisted her seat patrons, and additionally, she also sold fundraising tickets. She was inspired to pursue acting by her theatrical performances.
Zendaya joined Future Shock Oakland, a hip-hop dance troupe, when she was eight years old and remained a member for three years. She also danced hula for two years with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts.
While still a student at Oakland School for the Arts, Zendaya was cast in several roles in local theaters.
She appeared as Little Ti Moune in Once on This Island at the Berkeley Playhouse and as Joe in Caroline, or Change at TheaterWorks in Palo Alto.
Keith Kreitman of the San Mateo Daily Journal called Zendaya’s 11-year-old performance “a pure delight” in his review of the latter. She studied at the American Conservatory Theater and the CalShakes Conservatory.
Her stage credits include appearances in several plays by William Shakespeare. She appeared as Lady Anne in Richard III, Celia in As You Like It, and in a Twelfth Night production.
Zendaya began her career as a model for Macy’s, Mervyns, and Old Navy. She made an appearance in an iCarly toys commercial. She also appeared as a backup dancer in a Sears commercial alongside Disney star Selena Gomez.
In December 2016, Zendaya appeared as a guest judge on the 15th season finale of Project Runway. She made her feature film debut as Michelle in Spider-Man: Homecoming in July 2017.
In 2021, Zendaya starred in Malcolm & Marie, which was filmed during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. To minimize health risks, the production adhered to strict safety protocols and employed a small crew.
Zendaya previously collaborated with Labrinth on the song “All for Us” for the first season of Euphoria, and in 2022 she co-wrote two songs (“I’m Tired” and “Elliot’s Song”) for the second season, performing as a vocalist on the former.
The second season of Euphoria earned her four Emmy nominations for her performance as Rue, for which she received continued acclaim.
She became the youngest two-time nominee in Emmy history when she was nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama for the second time, while her nomination as an executive producer for Outstanding Drama Series made her the youngest woman ever nominated for producing.
